A road construction project connecting Hung Hoa town to Di Nau commune encountered significant engineering challenges due to poor soil conditions, with a problematic ground layer ranging from 2.5 to 4.8 meters thick that threatened differential settlement and embankment stability. Traditional remediation methods such as prefabricated vertical drains with surcharge preloading and deep soil mixing were deemed unsuitable due to time constraints and technical complexity respectively. To address these challenges, Tensar implemented the innovative TensarTech Stratum Cellular Foundation Mattress system, which featured a robust foundation mattress constructed with HX geogrid base and uniaxial geogrid walls that created aggregate-filled compartments. This solution successfully controlled uneven settlement, reduced long-term settlement rates, enhanced bearing capacity, and improved overall embankment stability while enabling rapid construction and enhancing drainage characteristics of the embankment construction.

The project needed a solution for controlling differential settlement and stability of the road embankment. Traditional methods were unsuitable - prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) with surcharge preloading would take too long, whilst deep soil mixing would be technically difficult and expensive.
