Townsville Port Expansion
Constructed in 2025
“We had a complex varied former sea reclamation site including soft soils. By using a combination of heavy Triaxial and InterAx geogrids, we provided a stabilised layer that could immediately take the running loads of fully loaded 40T Moxies and triple side tippers. All parties were amazed. Highly recommended!”

The client Port of Townsville wanted to develop this 15-hectare laydown area over reclaimed marine land, to support transportation of wind turbines. With a limited budget, the Port wanted to use as much existing rock as possible to build a stable platform on this variable, weak subgrade.
The consultant, Civil IQ specified the use of Tensar's large aparture stabilisation geogrids to support the re-use of existing coarsely graded granular aggregate where particle sizes were up to 150mm. This approach saved the Port tens of millions of dollars in aggregate procurement and cartage costs across the entire project.
