The Mantaray Marina Residences Australia

Queensland, Australia

The Mantaray Marina Residence development in Queensland, Australia represents a successful application of innovative geogrid technology to overcome challenging ground conditions on problematic reclaimed land. Constructed in August 2024 by contractor Multiplex, this luxury Gold Coast development faced significant engineering challenges due to loose sandy soils and debris accumulated over a prolonged vacancy period, requiring a safe yet economical working platform solution after initial biaxial geogrid proposals failed to deliver adequate value. Tensar's innovative T-Value approach provided the breakthrough solution, utilising a single-layer Tensar InterAx® geogrid with 85% CBR aggregate material to achieve 55% reduced platform thickness whilst maintaining structural integrity through mechanically stabilised layer technology that accurately models geogrid behaviour.

Benefits

  • Platform thickness reduced by 55% through optimised design
  • Improved ground performance using 85% CBR aggregate material
  • Enhanced stability achieved with a single-layer of Tensar InterAx geogrid
Client Challenges

This reclaimed site presented significant challenges to the development with the presence of loose sandy soils and debris built up over a prolonged vacancy. The client needed a working platform that was safe, but also economical to build, however the initial proposals with biaxial geogrids didn’t offer enough value for the project. This prompted the contractor to seek advice and proposals from Tensar for an engineered solution to take into account project conditions whilst also offering suitable savings to the projects.

Tensar Solution

Tensar’s T-Value approach enabled working platform design with 55% reduced thickness despite challenging ground conditions. This methodology accurately models the Tensar InterAx® geogrid behaviour within mechanically stabilised layers, providing a cost-effective, technically validated solution. Contractors operating on the platform successfully installed hundreds of piles, demonstrating its practical effectiveness. The single Tensar InterAx® geogrid layer optimised platform design while maintaining structural integrity, delivering efficient ground stabilisation in difficult site conditions. Site-specific CBR testing showed a CBR of 85% on the platform surface, further validating the integrity and performance of Tensar’s mechanically stabilised working platform solution.
