The Morning Sun Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province Vietnam Walls and Slopes

Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province

Morning Sun Travel faced significant challenges with long-term material durability for their retaining wall structures at the coastal Hyatt Regency Ho Tram Resort & Residences in Vietnam. Tensar engineers deployed RE500 series HDPE uniaxial geogrids, proven through extensive lifetime testing to withstand aggressive marine environments. The solution incorporated a 4-metre single-tiered gabion retaining wall with geogrid layers connected using polymer bodkin, enhancing structural integrity beyond typical friction-based connections. By utilizing site-won materials as reinforced fill, the project achieved substantial construction economies while delivering exceptional chemical resistance, aesthetic appeal, and structural reliability. The successful implementation demonstrates how specialized geosynthetic solutions enable durable, cost-effective infrastructure in challenging coastal environments, with the project completed efficiently in August 2022.

Benefits

  • High durability against the marine environment
  • Achieving an attractive appearances
  • Reliable structure with lower costs and construction time
Client Challenges

The project, situated beside the East Vietnam Sea in Southern Vietnam, raises client concerns about long-term chemical and environmental resistance of reinforcing components for retaining wall structures. Tensar uniaxial geogrids are manufactured from high-density polyethylene and can resist extremely aggressive chemical environments. Therefore, the client then contacted Tensar representative to seek an alternative solution.

Tensar Solution

Tensar suggested using the RE500 series HDPE uniaxial geogrids, which have proven to perform stably in long-term marine environmental conditions. The durability of Tensar’s geogrids has been rigorously tested through extensive assessments and lifetime studies. A single-tiered gabion retaining wall, with a maximum height of 4 metres, was then designed and introduced to the customer. The geogrid layers were sandwiched between gabion units and connected with gabion units using polymer bodkin, ensuring enhanced connection capacity rather than relying only on the frictional component. Using site-won material behind as fill reinforced with HDPE uniaxial geogrid brought more benefits in construction cost and time.
