To create a more resilient future, we believe we need infrastructure that optimises construction efficiencies and performance and minimises environmental impact. Our technologies help reduce the use of natural resources and improve the carbon footprint of infrastructure and other projects. We think of these benefits as central to our value proposition.
Since our invention of the original geogrid in 1978, our culture has been built on innovation, continuous improvement, integrity, teamwork and social responsibility.
Today, as a global business we align our efforts with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and have taken meaningful steps towards several of these vital goals. Environmental Product Declarations
Minimising environmental impact needs to be a core consideration in the commissioning, design and construction of every project. EPDs provide a valuable tool by which clients, specifiers and purchasers can make meaningful decisions about the products they choose to use, based on their overall environmental impact.
As part of this effort, Tensar conducted cradle-to-grave Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) assessments in the UK for our geogrids. This means that the environmental impacts are assessed for the whole life of the product and beyond that to re-cycling or disposal. 80% of our products are now covered by EPD's, including all of our Tensar InterAx variations.
Carbon Calculator
We quantify the benefits of our products and solutions with our Carbon Footprint Calculator, which we developed to demonstrate the environmental effectiveness of our products and systems. This proprietary tool, which can be accessed in the award winning, cloud based Tensar+ software program and whose effectiveness has been third-party verified, estimates the potential carbon savings from using our products and systems compared to traditional methods of construction.
Energy Efficiency at Facilities
We continue to focus on reducing energy use at our manufacturing and office facilities. At our UK facility, for example, we identified energy efficiency measures including monitoring equipment, combined heat and power, solar opportunities, intelligent LED lighting, and new energy-efficient compressors for process machines. We identified 26 energy-saving measures and implemented 16 projects, resulting in 860 tCO2e annual savings. Our global headquarters in the US is in the process of converting to energy-saving intelligent LED lighting.
Tensar's UK manufacturing facility is now approved to only use electricity from renewable sources to create all of our geogrid products.
Our Commitment to ESG
As a division of CMC, our commitment to ESG is central to our purpose and strategy.
