THE PROBLEM
Oil and gas production equipment weighing 1,100 tonne needed to be moved along a route where the foundation soil had low bearing capacity and a high water table.
THE SOLUTION
A Tensar Mechanically Stabilised Layer (msl) incorporating Tensar geogrids and granular fill was used to provide increased bearing capacity over the weak soil. This enabled the project to proceed on schedule and avoided the need for a more traditional but expensive and time consuming concrete pavement construction.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A large module of oil and gas industry equipment, weighing over 1,100 tonnes, needed to be moved along a route over weak ground.
The client found that the foundation soil had significantly higher water content than expected. Improved drainage of the foundation was not an option within the required time frame and the use of a more traditional approach of heavy concrete slabs was impracticable in the time available.
A Tensar Mechanically Stabilised Layer (msl) was constructed within the required time frame which enabled the client to move the heavy machinery over the area quickly and safely. Construction time was saved and costs were reduced as the client saved the expense of constructing more conventional concrete pavements.
