THE PROBLEM
In order to operate a piling rig on a site of weak or variable ground, a safe working platform needs to the provided. This requires a certified design to be undertaken by a competent party.
THE SOLUTION
Redrow Homes turned to Tensar International to obtain an assessment of the project information, (soils, loadings etc) and provide a design for the platform. The opportunity was taken to incorporate Tensar’s new TriAx geogrid and gain advantage of its capabilities to improve bearing capacity beyond that achieved by a more traditional Tensar biaxial geogrid.
This project enabled Tensar International to invoke its design services to contractors and also to introduce Tensar TriAx geogrid - a new geogrid product which brings enhanced performances in both traffic support and bearing capacity improvement.
The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) initiative on working platforms requires the contractor to provide a platform for the piling equipment that has been designed for the particular situation. The Tensar response was to propose a safe piling platform for all Load Cases, including a maximum imposed track pressure of 340 kN/m2.
An excavation was prepared for the working platform and the formation trimmed.
The composite construction was installed comprising Tensar TriAx geogrids and compacted layers of a graded aggregate, (obtained from demolition works within the site).
The following day, the piling operations were underway. The Client says, “We were happy to use Tensar’s technical services and feel that we got the support we needed to keep us on programme.”
