THE PROBLEM

The store developer had requested a low-cost, yet effective solution. It was particularly important to steepen the slope as much as possible to ensure that the store could utilize the maximum amount of available space. Also, it was necessary to avoid a high pressure gas pipeline situated close to the base of the proposed steep slope. By using a standard shallower slope angle, it would not have been possible to avoid the gas pipeline or reach the required development level.

THE SOLUTION

Construction of the TensarTech GreenSlope at an 80° angle utilizing Tensar RE500 series geogrids maximized the developable land and avoided interference with the existing gas pipeline. This was achieved at a fraction of the cost of a traditional reinforced concrete solution or a gabion wall.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A Tensar MSL™ (mechanically stabilised layer) incorporating Tensar TriAx® geogrids was designed at the foundation level of the reinforced soil slope due to the problematic clayey and loamy soils. The MSL has the additional benefit of providing a drainage layer beneath the main reinforced soil structure.

The TensarTech GreenSlope structure measured a total of 152m in length and the height varied from 0.7 m to  6.9 m. Above the TensarTech GreenSlope structure, the ground continues to rise with a 1:1.75 (30 degree) crest slope to a maximum additional height of 5.8 m. The reinforced soil design caters for the additional crest slope loading.
