A UK innovation has won a construction award in the USA. Tensar International’s innovative TriAx™ geogrid gained the prestigious 2009 Best New Products Top Rollouts Award from Better Roads® Magazine, following its launch in North America. The only award in its category, it was one of only 20 products ‘that enriched the highway and bridge construction industry’ in 2009.
“We truly believe that TriAx geogrid redefines roadway reinforcement, and we’re delighted that the editors of this respected publication have recognised its innovation and potential,” remarked Tim Oliver, Tensar International Vice President for Global Marketing. “It has now received awards in major markets across the world.”
First introduced in the UK and Europe in 2007, TriAx geogrid features a triangular aperture design. Combined with its square-edged, deeper rib profile, TriAx geogrid confines aggregate to form a stabilised composite layer that outperforms Tensar’s biaxial rectangular aperture geogrid products.
Oliver continued: “Our experience in Europe, where many millions of square metres are installed, is that the better performance and value of TriAx geogrid are appreciated. That’s why engineers are quickly switching from biaxial products to TriAx.” Research from the US indicates that Tensar International’s roadway improvement systems featuring TriAx geogrid can reduce asphalt quantities by 15% to 30% and aggregate base/sub-base requirements by 25% to 50%. Alternatively, it can extend maintenance and rehabilitation intervals to increase the service life of flexible pavements up to five times.
