EXCITING NEW TECHNOLOGY MEANS MORE ENERGY SAVING FOR TENSAR

Long-standing LancsBEA member Tensar International is a world leader in the production and provision of soil reinforcement and ground stabilisation solutions.

The ISO 14001 certified Blackburn-based Company are a dedicated member of LancsBEA’s Resource Efficiency Club and are continually looking for ways to improve efficiency within their production process.

Tensar design and produce a range of geogrid and geotextile products that are used within construction projects to amongst other things, provide solutions to grade changes requiring retaining walls or slope and for improving soil conditions.

The technology helps to make construction projects such as roads and buildings more cost effective and resource efficient as incorporating the technology can reduce the amount of aggregate needed within a development. The production process for the geogrid and geotextile technology is extremely efficient with almost all waste material generated being reincorporated back into the production process.

Overall only 1% of waste material from the production process leaves the site as waste with Tensar encouraging this waste to be reused by other companies.

Energy Technology

The Company has recently introduced an exciting new piece of technology into their production process to reduce energy use and emissions. A patented magnetic fuel treatment system has been installed onto one of the Company’s gasfired 5000kg/hour steam driven boilers to improve combustion. The system does this through applying a finely calibrated magnetic field directly into the fuel, producing a cleaner burn. The technology, which has a payback period of 2 years and requires no electricity supply, has a guaranteed 5% minimum saving on fuel, which will help Tensar to save £10,000 on fuel and 109 tonnes of carbon a year. As well as the introduction of the new technology, Tensar have given all members of staff full energy awareness training.

Lighting

Following the Company entering Climate Change Levy Agreements, a lighting initiative has been developed where excess and unnecessary light fittings have been removed, remaining light fittings changed from T12 to more efficient T5 fittings and light sensors have been installed. The initiative has reduced Tensar’s electricity consumption by 10%, equivalent to 622,000 kWh and 268 tonnes of carbon a year, saving the Company approximately £60,000 a year.

Compressed Air

A LancsBEA compressed air survey was also carried out on Tensar’s compressed air system that identified 8 holes and made the Company savings of £1015 once the repairs had been carried out.
