It is crucial to find a way to treat problems such as cracking and rutting when engaging in the repair of asphalt pavements. It has been demonstrated that structural reinforcement of the asphalt layers with Tensar AR-GN does this and prolongs the service life.


    Consisting of a stiff polypropylene grid which has very high dimensional stability, junction strength and high rib profile, AR-GN is a composite, with the grid supplied thermally bonded to a fabric backing. The backing renders installation easier, acts as a stress-absorbing membrane interface and forms a long-term water barrier once saturated with bitumen during installation. The new asphalt layer creates a reinforced pavement by mechanically interlocking into the grid’s apertures. Combined with its integral interlock within the asphalt matrix with the grid’s high stiffness at very low strain levels, it offers incredible resistance to cracking, especially fatigue cracking. By enhancing the performance of the new asphalt, AR-GN has the potential to enable a reduction in overlay thickness by up to 30% when compared with unreinforced overlays.

    Additionally, when placed nearer the pavement surface, AR-GN may contribute to resistance of asphalt rutting associated with low stiffness mixes, high ambient temperature and slow, heavy wheel loading. Tensar AR-GN should have a minimum initial compacted thickness of 70mm of asphalt placed on top of it, in order to function effectively.
