Rail Track Support

For railways around the world, line speed restrictions and expensive and disruptive track maintenance are frequently caused by poor track geometry and misaligned rails. But Tensar’s rail track design technology has been proven to substantially reduce track maintenance, being the subject of extensive independent research and development and approved by Network Rail in the UK and National Rail Authorities worldwide. In particular, the large aperture Tensar TriAx TX190L geogrid has been designed to lock ballast in place to limit lateral movement and keep tracks aligned.

How you can benefit

Compared with traditional trackbed construction, creating a mechanically stabilised railway ballast layer can:

  • Maintain track geometry for longer
  • Reduce the rate of ballast settlement
  • Reduce maintenance induced ballast degradation
  • Extend the rail track maintenance cycle by a factor of around three
  • Stabilise ballast for well over 20 years

New Lines

New rail track construction over weak or variable subgrades Tensar TriAx geogrids can mechanically stabilise granular sub-ballast layers, reducing their thickness by about a third. Tensar geogrid systems can also be used to provide soil reinforcement of embankment foundations.

How you can benefit

Compared with traditional rail track construction, trackbed improvement using a mechanically stabilised railway sub-ballast layer can:

  • Cut construction time and costs by reducing the sub-ballast needed for the same bearing capacity
  • Subgrade excavation depths and resulting spoil quantities can be reduced
  • Reduced materials quantities deliver a more sustainable solution
  • Maintain rail track geometry

Certification and Approval

TriAx TX190L geogrid has been approved by rail authorities, including Network Rail, for improving the performance of ballasted track.

There are two ways in which Tensar geogrids can be used to stabilise railway trackbeds and maintain track alignment:

  • Reinforcing the ballast layer with the large-aperture TriAx TX190L geogrid reduces ballast deformation and the rate of track settlement to extend the maintenance cycle with huge whole life benefits
  • Improving the track foundation using Tensar TriAx geogrids stabilises the sub-ballast layer and increases the bearing capacity over soft subgrade, reducing sub-ballast thickness with time, cost and carbon savings.
